This was a pretty mixed bag for me. The first act is a really rough start and I thought a lot of it was forced, especially the dialogue. Most of the movie felt really unnatural and just not genuine. A lot of the time it felt like it was trying to ripoff Adam McKay (which is ironic considering Charles Randolph also wrote The Big Short) with a ton of jarring fourth wall breaks and fast paced editing trying to educate you and this only works when he’s the director, not when you try to copy his style. And talk about jarring, I love Charlize Theron but God her Megyn Kelly voice is as jarring as all fuck. It felt so weird and once again, unnatural and I was really underwhelmed by her performance. But it really does pick up in the third act with some truly compelling moments especially from Margot Robbie who I think definitely deserves a nomination. They do a good job at making you feel really uncomfortable with how terribly Ailes treated these women. I also thought John Lithgow and Nicole Kidman really stood out and surprisingly Kate McKinnon gives her best movie performance yet, certainly a giant step up from Yesterday. Her relationship with Margot Robbie’s character was the most interesting of the movie and so was their whole storyline. Overall, there’s a lot to like about Bombshell but the execution is just not all there. But I was very happy to see Long Beach Island featured!!!
